CANNABIS SEIZURES-1985

3 kgs Cannabis seized by Customs Case Reference: CIB/1/12 and 13/85

On 10 January 1985, Customs officers seized 1.25 kgs of herbal cannabis when they searched the luggage of a Chinese female who arrived on a flight from Manila. The cannabis was concealed in two cigar boxes and a record album box in her travelling bag. Follow up enquiries revealed a further 1.25 kgs of herbal cannabis, similarily packed, discarded on the ground near the baggage carousel. It is believed this package was smuggled by another courier.

Result: Defendant was sentenced to two years imprisonment.

330 gms Cannabis Resin seized at Airport

Case Reference: CIB/1/78/85

On 5 March 1985, Customs officers seized 350 gms of cannabis resin from an American male who arrived at Kai Tak on an incoming flight.

Result:

The defendant was fined a total of $2,000.

2 kgs Cannabis Resin seized by NB

Case Reference: AP/CCR 162/85

On 20 March 1985, Narcotics Bureau officers seized 2 kgs of cannabis resin when they searched a 31 year old Australian male as he was about to depart from Hong Kong on a flight to Tokyo. The resin, which is believed to have originated in China, was strapped to the male's upper body and kept in place with a woman's girdle.

Result: Defendant was sentenced to one year imprisonment.

2.1 kgs Cannabis Resin and 133 gms Heroin seized by SDS

Case Reference: TST/CCR/1298/85

On 22 March 1985, as a result of information supplied by Narcotics Bureau and further developed by Kowloon Region Special Duties Squad, some 133 gms of No. 3 heroin and 2.1 kgs of cannabis resin were seized when a search was carried out at Lee Garden Guest House, Chung King Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui. Five people, including a Sierra Leone male and an Australian male, were arrested. Result:

Five persons were charged in connection with a number of small seizures and fined from $200 to $2,000. No one was convicted of possession of the cannabis resin, because it was found in a common area and ownership could not be proved.

Customs seized 1 kg Cannabis at Kai Tak

Case Reference: CIB/1/94/85

On 28 March 1985, Customs officers seized 1 kg of herbal cannabis when they arrested a U.S. male at Kai Tak. The male, who had the cannabis strapped to his body and inside his shoes, arrived on a flight from Manila.

Result:

Defendant was sentenced to two years imprisonment, however this sentence was reduced to 18 months after appeal.
