Opium and opium smoking equipment seized at an opium divan.

400 gms Opium seized by NB

On 5 July 1985, NB officers neutralized an Opium Divan at 1st Floor, 300 Reclamation Street with the seizure of 400 gms of prepared opium and some smoking paraphernalia. One Chinese male was arrested. Result: The Chinese male was fined $4,000.

27 kgs of Raw Opium seized by NB

Case Reference: TP/CCR/1073/85 & SS/CCR/1113/85

On 12 July 1985, following a six weeks investigation, NB officers neutralized an opium importation and distribution syndicate, arresting 10 Chinese males together with the seizures of 27 kgs of raw opium. Officers first intercepted a private car at Tai Po Road outside Hong Lok Yuen. Two Chinese males were arrested when 1 kg of raw opium was found onboard the vehicle. The arrest sparked off further raids in Kowloon and the New Territories. An opium store at 16 On Kwok New Village, 1/F, Sheung Shui was raided and 26 kgs of raw opium was seized together with one Chinese male arrested. Another Chinese male was arrested at his home at Lau Fau Shan. Raids in Kowloon resulted in the uncovering of an opium divan at Flat B2, 5th Floor, 83 Waterloo Road. Four Chinese males were arrested and some opium smoking paraphernalia seized. Two more Chinese males were also arrested for possession of a small quantity of opium at a flat at Sai Yeung Choi Street. The opium seized was believed to have been smuggled into Hong Kong from China.

Result:

One defendant was sentenced to five years imprisonment when he pleaded guilty to trafficking in 25 kgs of opium. The case against the others is pending.

4 kg Opium seized by Customs Case Reference: CIB/1/120/85

On 9 August 1985, officers of the Customs Investigation Bureau neutralized an opium distribution syndicate in Mong Kok, arrested three Chinese males and seized 4 kgs of opium plus a complete set of smoking paraphernalia. Officers first intercepted a Chinese male in Nathan Road and found in his possession 1 kg of raw opium. Later another Chinese male was also intercepted outside his flat in Shanghai Street. A search of the flat located 1 kg of raw opium and 0.5 kg of prepared opium. A third raid in the cock-loft of a roast-meat shop in Canton Road resulted in the seizure of 1.5 kg of raw opium. The proprietor was arrested when he surrendered himself to the Customs on the following day.

Result: Pending.
