HONG KONG: BN (0) STATUS AND VISA ABOLITION

I thought I should drop you a line about a telegram we have received from Hong Kong reporting on a discussion senior officials there had with the Danish Consul-General, Mr Donde.

I hasten to say that my intention is not to stir up disagreements within the Nordic family far from it! But I imagine that

you will already have had a report on the meeting and I should not want there to be any misunderstanding.

According to the Hong Kong record, Mr Donde said that, since the Danish Prime Minister's visit to Hong Kong last Easter, there had been regular contact between his Consulate and Copenhagen on the issues of BN (0) and visa abolition. He understood that no problems were foreseen in recognising the BN (0) status and the passport that goes with it.

On visa abolition, Mr Donde referred to the forthcoming Nordic meeting towards the end of this year that would discuss the matter again. He understood that the Danish attitude towards removing the visa requirement in respect of Hong Kong passport holders would this time be positive and favourable. But of course the Nordic countries would have to act together. In answer to a question, Mr Donde said that as far as he knew visitors from Hong Kong did not pose any problems for the Danish authorities. Of a total of around 2,000 visa applications a year received by his Consulate, only a tiny number was refused.

According to my records on the visa abolition question, the Nordic experts meetings this year have been inconclusive because of doubts in Oslo (in June) and Copenhagen (in July). I hope
