9. BDTC passports currently held by Hong Kong people will remain fully valid until their date of expiry or until they are handed in on application for a BN (0) passport. BDTC passport issued to a Hong Kong BDTC from 1 July 1987 will be valid beyond 30 June 1997. Such passports issued in Hong Kong until that date will continue to be issued by
the Governor.
RETURNABILITY TO HONG KONG

The British Government have agreed with the Chinese Government that the passports of BN (0)s will be endorsed as follows:
"The holder of this passport has Hong Kong
permanent identity card number
(xyz)
which
states that the holder has the right of abode in Hong Kong."
This endorsement will guarantee the holder's returnability to Hong Kong, both before and after 1 July 1997. BN (0)S
will in fact
in fact have exactly the same returnability to Hong
Kong as BDTCS from the
the territory.* It has been agreed
between the British and Chinese Governments that the
referred permanent identity cards issued by the Hong Kong Government up to 30 June 1997 will continue to be used after that date until replaced by
permanent
identity
cards
to in this endorsement
issued
by the Special
Administrative Region Government and that such replacements
will bear the same number.

There are currently about three and a quarter million
Kong BDTCS of whom just over one
million
hold
in
that status.
