memorandum attached to the Sino-UK Agreement, all persons who airl presently British Decendent Territories Citizens in Hongkong wili cease to be BDTCs with effect from 1st July, 1997. These persIORS

will thereafter be entitled to use separate pas ports which will

he issued by the UK Government but without the right of abode in

the (K. These regula tions will cover approximately 4,400 persons

of Indian origin in thng Kong who currently hold British

Dependent Territories Citizenship.

The Government of India are of the view that the UK

Government have a basic responsibility towards the EOTCs of Indian

origin in Hong Kong and that the United Kingdom should take all

Necessary steps to ensure that this category of persons is not rendered stateless after July 1, 1997. The Govermns of India

are in close touch with the UK Government on this matter.
