subsequently renounces or is deprived of BDTC status before
30 June 1997 will not meet this requirement, and cannot therefore
retain BN(0) status beyond that date. In practice Article 4(3) would
not so operate so as to render a person stateless. Under section 12(3)
and 40(5) of the British Nationality Act 1981 a person may not
respectively renounce or be deprived of British citizenship if he
would thereby be rendered stateless (except on grounds of disloyalty). Sections 24 and 40(10) of the BNA 1981 apply these provisions to BDTCS. Thus a BDTC who has no other citizenship, and who acquires BN(0) status, cannot renounce and in practice would not be deprived
of his BDTC status since under Article 4(3) he would also lose his
BN (0) status and would thereby be rendered stateless.
