Government does not consider it right to provide
for British nationality to be transmitted indefinitel;
This would be contrary to long-established principle
of our law. British nationality is secured until
about the middle of the next century. Consider
the right course at that time will be for those
affected to apply for Chinese nationality, although
they will not be compelled to do so.

RIGHT OF ABODE IN HONG
KONG
Chinese Government have confirmed that non-Chinese
who meet the legal requirements under the Chinese
nationality law may apply for Chinese nationality
and that such cases would be dealt with by the
appropriate authorities.
No form of British nationality can confer right
of abode in Hong Kong after June 1997, when Hong
Kong ceases to be British territory. Rights of
abode in Hong Kong are safeguarded under the Agreemen The provisions cover all non-Chinese British Dependen Territories citizens in Hong Kong, unless they have left Hong Kong permanently and have right
of abode elsewhere.

DO NOT WORK OUT

the Agreement. But if circumstances were to change, then would expect the Government of the day to consider sympathetically individual applications
to come here.
