Dear Sir Peter,
I had the pleasure of meeting you last month here in Hong Kong when we were both guests of John Swaine at the Races.
I somewhat unashamedly took the opportunity at that social gathering to discuss with you the situation of Hong Kong's ex-serviceman, and was pleased to find that you were interested t hear my views on the subject to the extent that you kindly suggested I should write to you.
You may recall I had mentioned that the Chairman of the Hong Kong Prisoners of War Association had written to the Secretary of State for Home Affairs and had received a discourag- ing reply. It was then resolved that the assistance of the British Legion should be sought, as a consequence of which representations were made to that Association.
The documents enclosed are photocopies of the ones
mentioned above i.e.
1)
2)
3)
Letter from the Chairman, Hong Kong Prisoners of War Association to the Secretary of State for Home Affairs dated the 1st March 1985;
Reply from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office dated the 16th May 1985;
Joint Representation to the Royal British Legion, London, made by the Hong Kong & Chinese Branch of the Royal British Legion, the Hong Kong Prisoners of War Association and the Second World War Veterans Association and despatched on the 21st November last. Perhaps it should be explained that this document was the result of a visit to Hong Kong earlier this year of the Chairman of the Royal
Unfortunately, British Legion; Mr. Windsor Spinks.
Mr. Spinks passed away shortly after his return to Great Britain which was one of the reasons for the delay in sending the representations to London.
