*culture shock": unless you already have relatives and friends in the country you're moving to, you are leaving all your roots behind; all your family, friends and connections you have built up over the years. The older you are the more difficult this is to do.
Thirdly, unless you have easily-transferable skills, the income, prestige and status you have built up at home may all be lost. You could find yourself starting at the bottom of the social and economic pile in the new country.
These are all very important considerations you should reflect upon seriously before you take a step which could prove to be more significant than you anticipate.
Two more disadvantages of applying for US residency
1. There's a little-realised complication for people who apply for permanent residency in the United States. As a result of the exceedingly legalistic nature of the US system of govern-
once your application for permanent residence in the US has been approved (you're now on the waiting list--if you were born in Hong Kong that could be a wait of 20 years) you are then treated legally as a permanent resident of the United States.
Permanent residents do not need visas to visit the US--so your application for a temporary visa for tourism or business purposes will be refused! As will your application to renew your
current visitors' visa!
This means that between the expiry of your current tourist (B1 or B2) visa to the United States, you will be unable to tra- vel to the United States until such time as your application for permanent residency has been finalised. Of course, if you have a good lawyer, you will be able to argue that there are reasons why this rule should be waived in your case.
2. Once you have received your "green card" (your permission to reside in the United States) you are subject to US taxes on your world-wide income whether or not you are residing in the US. If your objective is simply another national status, I believe the duty to pay US taxes for the rest of your life is too high a price to pay.
