Sir,
Speech by the Chief Secretary in support of Miss Dunn's Motion in the Legislative Council on Wednesday 8 January 1986 in the White Paper
on the Draft Nationality Order 1986
In her letter to Members of both
both Houses of
Parliament written on behalf of all the Unofficial
Members, and in what she has said this afternoon in
moving this Motion, Miss Dunn has conveyed the strong and unanimous feelings of the Unofficial Members of this
Council and the people of Hong Kong on three issues concerning the draft Hong Kong (British Nationality)

The
Administration fully understands thrust of the arguments advanced in support of issues and
and the depth of feeling surrounding them.
Official Members of this Council this afternoon will
therefore support the Motion. Nevertheless, Sir, as I am sure Members will recognise the issues themselves
raise a number of difficult questions of principle for Her Majesty's Government, and these will require further
detailed consideration. I can assure Members that the
concern they have expressed will be conveyed to Her Majesty's Government and can further assure them that their representations will be given serious and detailed
consideration.
Sir, I support the Motion.
