Use of one-way viewers, omission of

witness' address in witness' statements

and protection of witnesses by the Police

The options were generally supported as they would encourage more witnesses to report crime and to give evidence, ensure the safety of witnesses and reduce the opportunities of revenge by triads. Papers supporting the options included Oriental Daily, Sing Po and Tin Tin Daily. HK Economic Journal also supported the use of one-way viewers but warned that this could encourage irresponsible and

malicious allegations. Ming Pao felt that the existing identification parade procedures should not be changed without good reason and the rights of

suspects should be protected.
