Respected Mr. Thomas,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure for me to have this opportunity of meeting the experts from the judicial circle and having a cordial chat with all of you.

Following Mr. Thomas' visit to China in September, the Chief Justice Sir Denys Roberts and his group of ten has re- cently visited Beijing, Xian and Guangzhou. These visits are undoubtedly helpful to promoting the exchanges and the under- standing between the judicial circles of Hongking and interior of China. Since the judges of foreign nationality make up a considerable proportion in the judicial circle, I would Like to suggest that more judges of foreign nationality be invited to visit various parts of China next year. Therefore, I may say that the gathering tonight may serve as the beginning of our further intercourse.

Hongkong is an international metropolitan city, which has extensive and close economic links with many countries in the world. To maintain Hongkong's position as the world's finan- cial and commercial centre, it's necessary to retain the whole set of its economic and management system which has been proved
