In an informal conversation with the Ambassador of Oman on 20 October, the UK Representative in Geneva asked whether his country could take any Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong. The Ambassador said that Oman could not take refugees as such, but did have a requirement for unskilled or semi-skilled workers, who would be admitted on two-year visas. He seemed to think that Vietnamese from Hong Kong could apply like anyone else for such jobs.

2.

Since permanent resettlement appears not to be a possibility we feel that, subject to any views you may have, we should take this idea no further since Oman does not encourage immigration of any sort.
