18. M. Bariani expressed his personal faith in the construction of Europe. There were real technical difficulties, but they would be overcome. His children did not question the reality of Europe. Lady Young echoed this theme. The British Presidency would aim to make solid progress towards a genuine Common Market which would benefit all our economies. Mr Weston pointed out that at the next British general elections membership of the Community would not be an issue for the first time in 25 years.
