Thank you very much for your letter of 13 February.

I am very grateful for the consideration that you have given to the various questions and would like to express our appreciation of the positive decisions which you have felt able to take. We are particularly pleased that you have agreed to allow asylum seekers permission to work six months after submitting their asylum applications and we believe that this will be of significant help to some refugees in improving their chances of satisfactory settlement in this country. Another measure which will certainly also have a beneficial effect on prospects for settlement is the granting of four years' leave to remain upon granting of refugee status. We do hope that it will be possible to introduce this change in the near future.

We look forward to the meeting which you have kindly agreed to between Home Office officials and representatives of the refugee communities in Britain. I am sure that this will be helpful in promoting better relations and a clearer understanding of the difficulties which inevitably face both officials and those who seek asylum.

I am also grateful for your confirmation that the extended family reunion criteria approved as a result of the SCORRI report include Lao and Cambodian refugees in Thailand. The numbers affected may be small but the communities concerned will be pleased to have this news.

I also found the meeting with the Home Secretary a valuable one and am confident of continuing good co-operation between the Home Office and the BRC.

Yours sincerely,

Arthur
