World University Service (UK) has a long history of co-operation with the ODA for whom it as administered scholarship programmes for refugees from Chile, Uganda, Ethiopia and Central America. In Zimbabwe, before independence, WUS (UK) administered a large bursary programme, funded by the ODA, which enabled thousands of African students to study at the University of Rhodesia.

In Autumn 1985, World University Service (UK) submitted proposals to ODA, which are currently under consideration, for funding of a scholarship programme for South African refugees and for support of alternative education programmes inside South Africa to be administered by WUS (UK). Funds totalling £600,000 are requested to establish this programme.

Increased educational support for disadvantaged South Africans is vital at this critical time. Britain has an important role to play in this.
