Description of resettlement caseload
a)
The total number of Indochinese refugees assisted by UNHCR in camps in East and Southeast Asia on 31 December 1985 was 159,665, a reduction of only 543 from the caseload at the end of 1984. This apparently static situation is qualified by the fact that camp censuses and the regularisation of a number of refugees who had been living informally in camps, added 4,915 Laotians and 7,989 Khmer to caseload figures.
b) Within the total caseload figure, the largest ethnic group is Hmong, numbering some 50,000. Other small highland groups raise the Laotian hilltribe figure to 56,238. All of the hilltribe refugees are located in camps in the North of Thailand near the Laotian border and comparatively few Lowland request resettlement as a durable solution to the problem of exile. Lao number 37,019. Khmer refugees in Thailand registered for resettlement number 31,761, and Vietnamese refugees, in various camps in Southeast Asia, totalled 34,647.
c) Resettlement activities in 1985 are represented by the departure figures in the following table. This figure is placed in perspective by comparison with arrivals and total caseload figures.
