Following a Refugee Action meeting in November, a new project to improve the lives of refugee and displaced women in Britain is underway. A steering group has been formed and one of its first tasks will be to find out what existing or current research there is on refugee wornen anywhere in the country. Anyone who knows about plans for future research or activities relating to women refugees is asked to get in touch. The group is also in need of funding. The Refugee Specialist Advice Project, a new project designed to give advice and assistance to refugees in the North East of England, has been set up recently in Gateshead to serve the needs of those throughout the North East Area of NACAB. The project is keen to establish contact with other organisations working with refugees and with individuals in the North East area who would be interested in training as volunteers. The Runnymede Trust has received a two-year grant from the GLC to establish a Resource Fund for the promotion of anti-racist research projects in public sector housing. A Housing Unit has been set up within the Trust to develop a London-wide research stragegy and is seeking to appoint an Information Officer to establish and maintain a regular publication and reference resource on racism and public housing and to research into, monitor developments and respond to requests for information in this field. (Guardian 29.11.85) The Unit will receive and consider applications for grants from London boroughs and community groups for research into such matters as housing allocation practices, the use of ethnic monitoring and the provision and translation of information. It will then monitor the use of these grants, as well as conducting its own research where necessary. (Runnymede Trust Bulletin November 1985)
Kirklees Community Enterprise_Training Agency is appointing an Ethnic Minority Development Worker to design and co-ordinate training schemes for the development of Worker Co-operatives among women of the ethnic minorities. (Guardian 4.12.85)
Clapham CAB has advertised for a Vietnamese Advice Worker to join the Bureau, 25% of whose current clients are Vietnamese for whom weekly specialist advice sessions are provided. (Guardian 11.12.85)
The Labour Party has a vacancy for an Ethnic minorities Officer who will be responsible for liaison with ethnic minority communities and groups, the development of campaigning activities, membership recruitment among ethnic minorities and will act as secretary to the Party's Black and Asian Advisory Committee. Following the failure of the governments of Hong Kong and the UK and of the UNHCR, a new campaign group has been formed to improve the situation of Vietnamese refugees in closed camps in Hong Kong. The group, which is composed of Refugees agencies, churches, relief organisations and individuals will be launching its campaign in the near future. A new organisation of lawyers and other legal workers which exainines International and Comparative Human Rights Law has established its base in London. The group's priority is litigation but it can advise other organisations on international legal issues including
