December 1985

There is an article by Vince Hines headed 'Black Self-Help Leads' which traces the history and successes of Black self-help projects in Britain from the early 1960s, in 'Voluntary Voice', December 1985. ('Voluntary Voice' is the new name of the London Voluntary Service Council's monthly newsletter.)

The Refugee Action Photographic_Exhibition is a compact display covering some of the issues which govern the lives of refugees in Britain, including asylum, housing, employment and training. It is suitable for use at conferences/workshops or can be used on its own for a non-specialist audience. Available on loan, further details from: the information officer Tel 0532 622401. (Refugee Action News, Winter 1985)

The Scottish Refugee Council is planning to conduct research into the numbers and main needs of refugees from different countries living in Scotland. (Refugee Action, Winter 85)

'News of Muslims in Europe', October 1985 contains a paper on Muslims and religious and multicultural education, which draws on the Centre for the Study of Islam's recent seminar, at which the relationship between religious identity and education was examined.

YODU's Quarterly Mailing, December 1985 reports on the appointment of 20 Youth Training Scheme development officers to encourage liaison with local ethnic minority communities. All the posts have been allocated, following discussion with the Commission for Racial Equality. There is also a description of Lambeth Asian Community Action Group Youth Project set up to fill a gap in local provision, which concentrated mainly on white and Afro-Caribbean youth. (A full annual report of the project is available from: Asian Community Action Group, 15 Bedford Road, London SW4.)

The Runnymede Bulletin, December 1985, includes a review of NUPE's report of its Race Relations Working Party (1985), which recommends changes in union rules and in the organisation of branch meetings. (The Report costs £l and should be obtainable from branches of the National Union of Public Employees - see telephone directory.)

According to 'Race and Mortgage Lending' (Commission for Racial Equality, 1985) Asians are twice as likely to be refused a mortgage from building societies as white applicants. (Runnymede Trust Bulletin, December 1985 the report is available free from the CRE, Elliot House, 10-12 Allington Street, London SW1.)

'No Entry

a report on the health care needs of Chinese people in Bloomsbury' (Bloomsbury Health Authority & Bloomsbury CHC, 1985) recommends the urgent recruitment of Chinese-speaking GPS and health visitors and the development of a policy on interpreting arrangements both in hospitals and in the community. (Runnymede Trust Bulletin, December 1985 - the report is available, price unknown, from: Bloomsbury HA & CHC, 25 Grafton Street, London WC1.)

There is an article by Andrea Waind (Sunday Times 29.12.85) on the work which is carried out by Link House, a Birmingham hostel for young Asian women.

'Social Work Today' (16.12.85) has three relevant items linked to social work training and recruitment. There is a profile of Adrianne Jones, Birmingham's SSD Director, in which she outlines the departments programme to increase the number of black and Asian staff. In a short article 'Ethnic myths that need exploding', Lynn Eaton links the findings of the CCETSW report (see page 4) with what is being done in several local authorities to improve recruitment. There is also a letter from tutors at South Bank Polytechnic which describes changes which have been made to the college's CQSW course, largely due to pressure from the student body. Further information can be obtained from: Black Social Work Students Support Group, The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford, London SE8.
