SOUTH EAST ASIA REFUGEES
APPEAL FOR 1986
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Assistance to the Vietnamese Boat People
refugees in the South East Asian countries continues to be provided by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the region. Several hundreds of new refugees still continue to land each month on the shores of the countries neighbouring Vietnam, while tens of thousands await to be accepted by countries of final asylum.
1.2 Important and vital health and welfare services including educational programmes - both vocational and language training - continue to be provided and enhanced, while the refugees are temporarily in these countries of first asylum. These essential activities undertaken by the Red Cross and Red Crescent activities are in addition to the
in addition to the general refugee assistance and the Tracing & Mailing Services provided by these National Societies as operational partners of UNHCR and ICRC.
1.3 This appeal for 1986 which totals CHF 1,854,096.50 covers the improvement and extension of health and welfare services and of vocational training and educational programmes. doing, it is expected that we would effectively contribute towards increasing the chances of acceptance of these refugees by countries of final settlement. Particularly, it is expected that the Programmes will benefit those with a record of long-stay in the Refugee Camps and Centres, while ensuring the improvement of certain health and sanitary facilities needing reconstruction and/or repair, in addition to the basic health and welfare services traditionally provided since 1978.

1.4 The League appeals to all National
National Societies to do utmost to raise the required funds to permit the continuation of our services to these forgotten refugees Boat People.
