Our information is correct.

Looking at the extra 100 places but no decision has yet been made. UNHCR have been told unofficially that Norway will accept "a substantial number of refugees".

300 places still to be taken from 1985/86 quota, UNHCR have informally been told that Sweden will accept 50 ethnic Chinese refugees. UNHCR have submitted a list of 227 (not all ethnic Chinese) for consideration.

Perhaps a few of the 36 family reunion cases will be taken.

The figure of 1600 was an exceptional one for 1985 only, this might be reduced for 1986 but the State Department might reconsider in the light of Hong Kong's encouraging effort.

3. Mr Cooper also told me of a paper which the UNHCR was in the process of producing entitled "Global resettlement needs" in which it considers Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong to be the most urgent. The UNHCR target for the coming year is for 4800 Vietnamese refugees to be resettled, if this figure was met it would hopefully clear the open camps.
