Dear David,
VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG
1. Thank you for sending us in last week's bag the list of VNDPS with close relatives in the Netherlands. I am sorry that the list became separated from your letter of 23 January
2. The official in the MFA responsible for the settlement of refugees in the Netherlands is Mr Michiel den Hond in Bureau Azielzaken. When I rang him to make an appointment, he told me that Nigel French from the Hong Kong Government Office in Brussels would be calling on him on Thursday (13 February) to cover much of the same ground. He also reiterated the now familiar Dutch line that representations on this problem should be made through UNHCR. I have since checked with Nigel who confirms what den Hond told me, and that he will also be handing over a list of the VNDPS. Nigel and I have therefore agreed that to avoid the risk of the Dutch becoming irritated by too
many approaches, even on an informal basis, he will go in alone on Thursday, as he originally planned to do, and that he will then circulate the record of his call.
