Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and Norway. He handed each
representative
a speaking note explaining HMG's decision to relax family reunion criteria in respect of refugees in Hong Kong and seeking their country's help, particularly with refugees who have been in Hong Kong for a long time because they lack relatives in resettlement countries.
a senior Hong Kong Government official attended the annual Executive Committee Meeting of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva. He held meetings with representatives from the Netherlands,
Austria,
Sweden,
Norway,
Denmark, Finland, Japan, France, Germany, Belgium, Australia, the United States, New
Zealand
and
Canada.
He was heard sympathetically and several firm commitments were made and promises fo support were given. He held meetings, in conjunction with UNHCR officials, with representatives
from those countries which preferred to respond to a specific direct approach from
approach from the UNHCR. Following the Executive Committee Meeting he visited Paris,
Paris, Brussels, London, New York, Washington and Ottawa to follow up and re-inforce the approaches made in Geneva, Hong Kong and London.
