GOVERNMENT REPLY TO THE THIRD REPORT FROM THE HOME AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (SESSION 1984-85 FC 72-1)

REFUGEES AND ASYLUM, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE VIETNAMESE

1. The Home Affairs Select Commitice's Report on Refugees and Asylum” was published in April 1985. The Committee's enquiry examined the issues associated with the Vietnamese refugees who are settled in Britain or are presently in countries of temporary asyium, particularly Hong Kong, as well as the more general question of refugee and asylum procedures.

2. The Government is grateful to the Select Committee for its timely, comprehensive and careful enquiry. It is in agreement with many of the Committee's recommendations. Where it differs from the Committee it has set out its reasous in detail and in some cases proposes alternative solutions to the genuine problems the Committee has identified.
