In response to our approaches in Washington, US Embassy
here have given FCO officials what seems to be
be the
the formal
US response to our demarche. This was that during fiscal year 1986 (ie from October 1985) US will consider an off take
from Hong Kong of about 1,600 (same as fiscal year 1985).
We understand that US regards this as an appropriate response to HMG's intiative, as it will represent largest off take by any resettlement country from Hong Kong announced for 1986, and will include a large proportion of long
stayers from the camps, in answer to Hong Kong Government
requests. We have in response instructed our Embassy to
thank the Americans, and to press nevertheless for an
increase of some kind, to strengthen our hand with
with other
countries, many of whom look to the US for a
resettlement
lead.
