1. Rhys Robinson, Under-Secretary in the Department of Employment and British representative on the ILO Governing Body (GB), has told us of an incident that took place at last week's meeting of the GB. According to Robinson, Wang Jianbang, Labour Counsellor at the Chinese Permanent Mission here, protested strongly against the description, in an ILO report, of Hong Kong as a "country". Hong Kong, he said, was not a country and should not be described as such.
COMMENT

The ILO Secretariat should know better. Unless you see objection, I shall have a word with the Legal Department shortly before the May meeting of the Governing Body, remind them of the facts of and sensitivities that surround this issue and urge them to greater accuracy in future.
