Dear Madam,
Please find enclosed a copy of a petition circulated by FOE Melbourne in support of the wishes of the people of Hong Kong to have the Daya Bay nuclear Power Station immediately shelved.

TAKEN
117 labour organisations, youth groups, social welfare organisations, unions and district boards within Hong Kong have joined together in an overwhelming demonstration of opposition to the project. Some of their reasons for opposing are listed below: any one of them is valid.
-the economic viability of the project is severely in doubt. The final unit cost of the nuclear electricity generated will most probably exceed the cost of coal fired electricity.
-the Westinghouse reactors being supplied for the project are the same type of reactor as that which underwent partial meltdown at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania in 1979. They are notoriously unreliable.
-in the event of a nuclear accident occuring at Daya Bay, 24,000 Chinese villagers face almost certain death and Hong Kong's 6 million people, stranded without feasible emergency plans, are threatened with all the horrors of radiation exposure.
-the veil of secrecy surrounding the project suggests further more serious problems of which the Hong Kong public should be made aware. Results of feasibility studies conducted by China and the United Kingdom have not been released.
FOE Melbourne fully supports the Hong Kong people in their campaign to discover why, in the face of all these problems and uncertainties, the Daya Bay project is going ahead.
FOE Melbourne calls on the British government to act immediately to shelve the Daya Bay project until it has been fully assessed in terms of economic viability and safety standards, and the results of this assessment been made fully available to the Hong Kong public.
Furthermore FOE Melbourne would like to know whether the British government would approve a plan to build a PWR plant of the same type as that at Three Mile
50kma from London.
