Monday, September 22: The return of the Legco delegation from Paking yesterday was prominently reported in the electronic and print media.

The statement issued by the Legco delegation was accorded extensive coverage in the media. Ching Po, Wen Wei Po, Ta Kung Pao and Wah Kiu Yat Po published the full text of the statement.

Some papers highlighted a remark by the Legco delegation that they falt assured that China would make every effort to ensure the safety of the Daya Bay plant would be in accordance with the highest international standards.

The Legco delegation described their visit to Peking as very useful and fruitful.

One of the delegation members, Richard Lai, told reporters that since the decision to build the Daya Bay plant could not be reverted, those who asked for the shelving of the project should shift the focus of their attention to the safety aspect of the nuclear plant.

The Oriental Daily News, quoting the latest issue of Wide Angle, said that Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping personally gave the go-ahead for the Daya Bay project on July 11.

Wah Kiu Yat Po reported that the question of whether the Daya Bay issue should be debated in the Legco would be discussed at the coming Legco in-house meeting on Friday. Senior Legco Unofficial Lydia Dunn would meet the press after the meeting.

The SCM Post reported that HK councillors will continue discussions with China Light in a bid to ensure that HK will have cheaper electricity from nuclear power than from coal or oil-fired energy.

In other developments, a spokesman for the Joint Conference for the Shelving of the Daya Bay Project, Anthony Ha, told the press yesterday after attending the nuclear technology exhibition at Star House that remarks by the Legco delegation to Peking were based on outdated information which did not take into account the Chernobyl accident.
