Saturday, September 20: The Legco delegation to Peking yesterday met representatives of China's stimal Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA) to discuss the independent of the administration in monitoring the operation of the Daya Bay plant, the media reported prominently.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, delegation leaders Maria Tam and Allen Lee said they were fully confident that the NNSA would exercise its power independently on monitoring the safe operation of the nuclear plant at Daya Bay.
The Director of the Nuclear Electricity Bureau Ma Fubang told newsmen that whether or not the recommendations contained in the Legco nuclear report would be accepted depended only on the technical practicality of the proposals and not on the costs involved.
He pointed out that the proposal in the report to install a sand-filter vent might bring disadvantages rather than advantages.
According to the HK Daily News, Mr Ma said that the 30 recommendations in the Legco nuclear report were not all favourable to the construction of the Daya Bay plant as they concentrated too much/ the question of safety.

When asked why China could not clearly guarantee that charges of nuclear power to be supplied by the Daya Bay plant in the next 30 years would not exceed the prices of electricity in HK, Mr Ma said this was purely a commercial engagement and had to be decided by the Guangdong Nuclear Power JVC as the Chinese authorities would not intervene.
The Centre Daily News quoted Mr Ma as saying that he was confident that Daya Bay electricity would be cheaper than power generated by other methods in the long-run.
The visit to China's Nuclear Research Institute by members of the Legco delegation was accorded good coverage in the Chinese press.
Allen Lee told reporters afterwards that the Legco delegation had more confidence in China's nuclear developments after the visit.
But he personally felt that China still had a long way to go in the nuclear field.
His fellow member Stephen Cheong said that HK people should put their heart at ease over the safety and operation of the Daya Bay plant because members of the research institute and scientists would take part in the management of the plant ›
