The Design and Construction of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power
Plant
The Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant is China's first large-scale commercial nuclear plant, the design and equipment of
which are acquired from abroad. The nuclear island will be supplied by Framatome of France and the conventional island by
the General Electric Company of Britain. Electricite de France
is responsible for design coordination, interface and management
of the whole project.
The most crucial part of the Plant design is the design
of the nuclear island. The reactor chosen for the Daya Bay Plant
is the Framatome M310 type which is based on
type which is based on the 900MW standard
design CPY and modified after having taken into account the
lessons learnt from the Three Mile Island accident.

incorporation of the sand filter system into the containment building design so as to further increase the safety features of the containment building at the highest level under condition of high pressure build-up". We are aware that some countries are in fact studying this issue. For instance, nuclear power stations in Sweden have requested for the addition of the sand filter
system. However, other countries have taken different views. According to the safety analysis done by various countries up to now, it is generally believed that the containment building of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) is strong enough to withstand the temperature and pressure resulting from the worst conceivable nuclear incident. The plant is safe even without having a sand filter system. No country has yet stipulated the incorporation of the sand filter system in their nuclear safety requirements.
Furthermore, what effects the addition of a sand filter system will bring to other systems of the plant, and the nuclear power
