Ta Kung Pao and the New Evening Post said attention to the safety facilities and safe operation of the Daya Bay plant had been raised following HK people's concern and discussion. The debate had come to a satisfactory end.

Sing Tao Wan Pao said that public opinion in HK was not given due regard here and that China only listened to those who supported its decision. It said that in the wake of Chernobyl, other countries had been considering phasing out nuclear energy.

Sunday, September 7: Remarks by Legco member Dr Conrad Lam on the Daya Bay issue were carried in most papers yesterday. He said that now that China had recognised Legco, it should invite all members of the council to Peking to express their views on Daya Bay.

Dr Lam described Legco members who rejected a motion for a special session to debate the Daya Bay issue as "ostriches.'

He said: "I think these people have eyes that cannot see the signatures of one million people. They have ears that cannot hear public voices. They have mouths, but they fail to speak for the public. They have legs, but they bow the knees before powers.

Dr Lam said a few Legco Unofficials, including Mai Lin Lee, Buetu Wah and himself, were considering going to Peking to refleel HK people's wishes on the Daya Bay issue.

Radio-3 reported that visiring theral MP David Alton said that he would ask the Governor, Sir Edward Youde, whether there was any way of re-opening negotiations on the Daya Bay project with China. The remark by Mr Alton was carried in Slug Pao the following day.

Legco Unofficial Andrew Wong told Commercial Radio-C's 'HK Telescope" today that a special Legco meeting should be held to allow the public to know the inclination of the majority of Legco members on

the issue.
