PRESS STATEMENT EY THE LEGCO DELEGATION ON
NUCLEAR POWER GENERATION ON RETURN FROM BEIJING
We have had a very useful and fruitful three-day visit
to Beijing.
Not only did we discuss in-depth our observations
with the relevant authorities in China, we also had the opportunity
to visit their nuclear research institutes and meet their top-
level scientists and engineers in this field. We were impressed
by their breadth and depth of knowledge, and close contacts with
their counterparts in France, USA, Japan, West Germany and other
countries. We noted their long working experience in the nuclear
field in China, and we were also pleased to learn of their
extensive knowledge gained through those international contacts.
Similar to all countries we visited, their approach to nuclear
power places safety and quality as top priority. We feel assured
that they will make every effort to ensure the safety of the Daya
Bay plant is in accordance with the highest intemational standards.
In the press statement issued before our departure, we
said we believed our tasks for this visit to Beijing were three-
fold:
(a)
to reflect to the Chinese Government the deep concerns
of the Hong Kong people and the need to address and
reduce sucl: concerne. In this respect, we believe we
have fulfilled our task. At the meeting with Vice-
