The SCM Post said in a front page lead that a major accident at the Daya Bay nuclear plant is a real, though exceedingly remote possibility but if it did happen, it would be impossible to evacuate HK's six million people.

The paper's London correspondent said that an exclusive interview in Britain yesterday with highly-placed sources close to the UK Aotmic Energy Authority at Harwell revealed that any plan to evacuate HK's residents would be "beyond comprehension" and "logistically impossible."

The sources claimed, among other things, that the HK Administration's criticism of the Harwell report was "the reaction of a Government under pressure."

Saturday, September 13: An exhibition on nuclear technology, which was jointly organised by the HK Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology and the Chinese Nuclear Society, would be open to the public today following an opening ceremony yesterday, the media reported.

Director of NCNA HK branch, Xu Jiatun, told reporters after attending the exhibition yesterday that the Daya Bay issue would not affect HK people's confidence.

He added that HK people's fears would be removed gradually when they knew more about nuclear energy.

In an inside-page lead, Ching Po quoted Mr Xu as saying that a proposal would be made to the State Council to set up an organisation comprising people from HK and Shenzhen to monitor the Daya Bay plant.

The media noted that 20 nuclear experts from China had been invited to hold talks during the exhibition.

The leader of the team of nuclear experts, Lu Guangyi, was quoted as saying that the exhibition in HK was not a result of the Daya Bay issue. They had been engaged in similar exhibitions in eight Chinese provinces since 1982.

Chairman of the organising committee for the exhibition, Dr Raymond Ho, said the aim of the exhibition was objective and non-political.

According to some media reports, the Joint Conference for the Shelving of the Daya Bay Project said in a statement issued yesterday that the report by the Legco nuclear fact-finding missions was not comprehensive and could not represent the wishes of HK people.
