Many papers picked up a story in yesterday's Wen Wei Po that the three main contracts and loan agreements for the Daya Bay project would be signed on September 23.

An engineer from the Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company, Gu Zhenjiang, said in an exhibition on nuclear technology yesterday that since China had 30 years experience in nuclear industry, the Daya Bay plant would be safe, highly efficient, reliable and of good quality.

He said that following the Chernobyl accident, China had set up an additional safety group to ensure the safe operation of the Daya Bay plant.

The HK Daily News hoped that the Legco delegation going to Peking would persuade China to defer the signing of contracts for the Daya Bay project to allow time for the HK public to gain a better understanding of nuclear energy.

aside.

The HK Times said the views of the people had been totally brushed

Wen Wei Po said China was sincere in implementing the "one country, two systems" concept and maintaining HK's prosperity and stability and certainly would not build a dangerous nuclear power plant on the doorstep of HK. The paper hoped that through the dialogue between the Legco delegation and Chinese officials, safety measures would be strengthened and worries removed.

Tin Tin Daily News described the Legco delegation's visit to Peking as useful and constructive.

A Centre Daily News columnist said Ming Pao had recently modified its strongly anti-nuclear position by claiming that it was only advocating for relocation of the project.
