picking up a report in yesterday's Oriental Daily News, Some papers/reported that when the Governor, Sir Edward Youde, visited Peking at the end of this month, he would reassure the Chinese that Britain attached importance to the Daya Bay contract and that HK people would gradually accept that the Daya Bay project was a safe

one.

Editorially Sing Pao said it would be a great achievement if representatives of the anti-nuclear lobby could persuade Peking leaders to defer the signing of the final contracts for the Daya Bay project by one to two months so that the Legco delegations could complete their reports in time before the signing. The paper said what people should oppose were unsafe nuclear plants. There should be no reason to oppose plants that were safe.

Wen Wei Po and the HK Commercial Daily believed that the people of HK would gradually come to accept the safety of nuclear power plants. Wen Wei and Ta Kung Pao noted that on economic considerations, the Daya Bay plant could supply cheaper power than conventionally-fired stations.

The HK Commercial Daily and Ching Po welcomed the visit to Peking by representatives of the anti-nuclear lobby and said it would provide an opportunity for a sincere exchange of views.

Monday, August 18: The electronic and print media today and over

the weekend gave prominent coverage to news and views relating to the Daya Bay nuclear plant.

Twelve representatives of the Joint Conference for the Shelving of the Daya Bay Project arrived in Peking last night armed with signatures from 1.04 million people in HK, the media reported.

They would be seeing officials of the HK and Macau Affairs Office and the Chinese Nuclear Industry Department this morning. They would also meet five nuclear experts this afternoon.

In its front-page story, Sing Tao Jih Pao said that unless there was any new arrangement, the representatives were unlikely to have an opportunity to see top Chinese leaders.

According to today's Sing Pao and Sing Tao, Legco member Dr Conrad Lam indicated that the group's Peking trip was a good way to drive home HK people's worries to the Chinese leadership.
