On 31 May 1986, the European Economic Community
(EEC) enacted regulations stipulating the levels of
radiation permitted in certain foods. These levels have
been adopted as the standards in the monitoring of imported
food in Hong Kong. In addition, before permission is
granted for the importation of food from Eastern bloc
countries, certificates are required to the effect that the
level of radiation of each consignment complies with that
set out by the EEC countries.

Food samples examined have been found to contain
levels of radiation per kilogram well within the stringent
international safety limit.
