(a) Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant

This topic has attracted most public attention last week. Most of our respondents expressed their worry that if leakage occurs, residents of Hong Kong will have no place to disperse. Most respondents believe that the Chinese Authority will continue to build the nuclear plant regardless of what Hong Kong people say. They feel the nuclear plant in Daya Bay is a potential bomb that could threaten the prosperity of Hong Kong. The Federation of the Education Group also launched a signature campaign in schools to oppose the project.

Respondents who are professional people feel less pessimis- tic and believe that if the plant is properly managed, it should not be the cause of so much alarm,

Some DB members have expressed their concern over the safety of the plant. So far the DB Chairman and the Environmental Affairs Committee Chairman have taken a rather mild stand and invited two lecturers from the universities to brief members on the risks posed by the nuclear plant. The lecturers gave a neutral briefing. Members hoped that JVC could release more information about the possible effects of radiation on Hong Kong. The DB members believe that the Chinese Government will definitely build the plant regardless of criticism by Hong Kong people. Board members who will be in Europe on a study tour next month are keenly interested in the possibility of visiting a nuclear plant in France which is under consideration by JVC.
