LINE TO TAKE FOR SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTIONS

Q

IS THE GOVERNMENT SATISFIED WITH SAFETY MEASURES FOR THE GUANGDONG NUCLEAR POWER STATION IN CHINA, TO BE BUILT NEAR TO THE HONG KONG BORDER?

A

Q

The nuclear reactor is to be supplied by Framatome of France and construction will be supervised by Electricte de France. Given Framatome's experience and excellent past record HMG is confident that the nuclear island will be constructed to meet the high standards of safety required. The French will also be involved in training the Chinese to operate the plant.

THERE IS GRAVE CONCERN IN HONG KONG ABOUT THE NUCLEAR SAFETY IMPLICATIONS FOR THE COLONY. WHAT IS BEING DONE TO ALLAY THIS CONCERN?

A

We recognise that the people of Hong Kong will wish to be satisfied that the Daya Bay plant is safe, and there are a number of initiatives under way to inform them more fully about the safety measures to be adopted at the station. A delegation from Hong Kong will shortly be visiting

a number of

countries with nuclear programmes.
