that he was ofter asked about the survivability of Deng's policies. People back home grumbled about prices etc but if you pressed they would concede that they were personally a lot better off than five years ago. You could hardly find an exception. I said we all knew about the financial, social and organisational problems thrown up by the reforms but I (for one) had no doubt at all that the present policies were better for China (and certainly Hong Kong) than what had gone before. In terms of the local interest I hoped very much they would be maintained. the success in agriculture had created a very large constituency for the current line? Certainly a "cushion against pressures" commented Li.
