The Guangdong project is

is the construction of a 2 x 985 MW PWR nuclear power station in Guangdong Province of the People's Republic of China to supply power to Guangdong and in greater measure to Hong Kong.

The power station, which will be China's first commercial nuclear power station, will be sited at Daya Bay about 30 miles from Hong Kong and the two units are due to come into operation in 1992 and 1993 respectively. The project was initiated in 1979 and developed through discussions between the Guangdong Power Company and China Light and Power Company Limited, the major Hong Kong electricity utility. The power station will be owned by the Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company which was formed in January 1985 between the Hong Kong Nuclear Investment Company and the Guangdong Nuclear Investment Company, with 25% Hong Kong ownership and 75% Chinese ownership. The principal Hong Kong partner is the China Light and Power Company.

GEC signed a a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese Joint Venture Company last week covering price and commercial aspects of the supply of the turbine generators for the power station.
