Action Taken
Thank you for your letter of 3 January on the outcome of negotiations about the Guangdong Nuclear Project.
In reaching this advanced stage, the project has had to
surmount an almost unparalleled set of hurdles.
You and your
colleagues in China Light and Power can take justifiable
pride in having had the initiative and vision several years ago to believe, against the odds, that a project of this scale and complexity could be brought to fruition. Whilst we have at times sat on opposite sides of the negotiating table,
the British Government has always recognised the contribution
China Light and Power have made to the efforts to establish
the project, and the support you have given to the use of British equipment.
I have every confidence in the ability of GEC and their
sub-contractors to make a success of the conventional island,
but we shall in any case continue to take a close interest in the project's progress.
The Lord Kadoorie, CBE, JP.
