5. Chiba drew no conclusions and the matter will now be taken up at the informal meeting on 12 May. I do not think, in view of the overwhelming support for renewal, that there is going to be any doubt about renewing Dunkel's contract for three years, but matters will probably be left entirely open after that. The real problem is likely to be heading off the pressure from the hardliners to initiate a debate or process leading to the establishment of cut and dried procedures. We know that what Shukla has in mind is the introduction of the principle of "rotation" ie to ensure the election of a LDC, I think we can count upon Tran and the Americans to work robustly against this notion.
