Manufacturing

The quantity index
(1) of manufacturing output increased by 7% in the first quarter and by 16% in the second quarter of 1986 compared with the corresponding periods last year. The recovery in manufacturing activity has continued into the third quarter, as evidenced by the figures on domestic exports (paragraph 2.1), retained imports of raw materials and semi-manufactures (paragraph 2.10), and the quantity of electricity consumed by the industrial sector (paragraph 5.15). A Quarterly Survey of Industrial Production was started by the Census and Statistics Department in 1982, with the purpose of compiling an index of industrial production covering the entire manufacturing sector. These quarterly indices are intended to reflect the up-to-date trends of net output in real terms. The following table gives the overall manufacturing index, together with the indices for the five most important industry groups :
