Increases in

employment during the second quarter were recorded for several major industries, including notably textiles (5%) and plastic products (14%).

Employment on building and construction sites (including civil engineering sites), at 64 000 in June 1986,

was little changed from June 1985 but was 3% lower than in

March 1986. A breakdown by sectors shows different

developments. While employment on building sites increased by 5% in June 1986 over June 1985, employment on civil

engineering sites fell by 23%, largely reflecting

completion of the MTR Island Line. For the building and

construction sector as a whole, however, employment (covering both site workers and non-site workers) in the second quarter of 1986 increased by 4% over the same quarter last year

as a whole increased by

Of the various services sectors, employment in financing, insurance, real estate and business services

increased by 78, that in the wholesale, retail and

import/export trades by 4응, and that in restaurants and
