are some useful indications in the area of travel and

tourism. Comparing the third quarter of 1986 with the same.

quarter last year, the number of visitors coming to Hong Kong

and the number of Hong Kong residents travelling abroad

(including to

(9) Macau and China) increased by 14% and 6% respectively. Given that the average per capita expenditure of incoming visitors is normally much higher than

it is likely

that there was a larger net surplus on travel and tourism expenditure in the third quarter of this year compared with the same quarter in 1985.

(8) The Survey of Imports and Exports of Services is carried out by the

Census and Statisitics Department on an annual basis.

(9) Comparing the third quarter of this year with the same quarter last year, the number of Hong Kong residents travelling to China increased by 9% while those to Macau decreased by 2%. They together accounted for 92% of the total number of Hong Kong residents travelling abroad.

(10) According to information supplied by the Hong Kong Tourist Association and by the Census and Statistics Department, the total expenditure of non-residents in Hong

non-residents in Hong Kong and of local residents abroad in 1985 were estimated at $15 billion and $13 billion respectively. The corresponding average per capita expenditure for incoming visitors and for local residents travelling abroad (excluding students' expenditure abroad) in 1985 were about $4,147 and $803.
