The faster growth in imports from China compared with imports from other countries may have been induced by the successive devaluations of the Renminbi over the last two years.

It may also be a reflection of China's recent efforts in promoting its exports, some of which were routed through Hong Kong to markets overseas. Largely as a result of the appreciation of the Yen, imports from Japan declined in the first half and showed no growth in the third quarter of 1986.
