Last Week Xu gave the press the impression that his European tour might be on again. We slapped in an enquiry, and an offer of good offices, to the NCNA. You will have seen a copy of Chris Wood's minute of 23 June.

Ji Shaoxiang told me today that the story was without foundation. Xu could definitely not visit Europe this year and Mr Ji was not at all sure whether he could next. But NCNA were again most grateful for the offer of help.
