Zaire The President of the Legislative Assembly of Zaire visited Britain in March 1985 and there is therefore an opportunity for a return visit. We are keen to inject more substance into our relations with Zaire to reflect the way it has followed a tough IMP restructuring programme, our own substantial commerical interests there, and President Mobutu's potentially important role in a settlement of the Angolan civil war. Mr Rifkind visited in May The Legislative Assembly does not, however, enjoy much power and ise. merely a rubber-stamping body.
Cameroon As a follow up to President Biya's recent official visit
In part a and his evident desire for warmer relations with the UK. former British colony and still conscious of its anglophone connections. A potentially valuable export market. A moderate influence within Africa and, internally, moving towards greater democracy. We are keen to thicken up relations to exploit commercial potential. We believe a visit by the Speaker would be welcome to Cameroonians.
Senegal Gave invaluable logistical support during and after Falklands' War (by providing RAF staging facilities, now much reduced since opening of Mt Pleasant airport). A genuine democracy, with an elected president who succeeded to office according to the constitution, who acts as a moderate influence in Africa and is tipped to become next Chairman of the OAU.
