DEMANDS ON THE SPEAKER'S TIME

Last summer I circulated the attached minute seeking suggestions from Departments for possible overseas visits by the Speaker, as a result of which the attached list was prepared and sent the Speaker's Office.
2.
This was followed by a meeting in December, chaired
by the Speaker's Secretary and attended by representatives of the FCO and officers from the CPA, IPU and the Overseas Office of the House of Commons. The meeting covered not only the Speaker's outward visits programme but also other demands on his time; for example requests for him to act as host to foreign and Commonwealth Speakers or to receive other senior foreign visitors, many of whom are FCO sponsored. The meeting, which was apparently of value to the Speaker's Office, resulted in the issue of the attached rolling programme of Speaker's engagements with an overseas content and a decision to hold similar meetings on a regular quarterly basis. The next has been arranged for 17 February.
3.
In preparation for this meeting I should be grateful if Departments would let me have a) any suggestions for overseas visits by the Speaker up to and including the 1988 summer recess and b) notice of any possible demands on the Speaker's time in connection with inward visits of which they are aware up to the end of this year. May I please have this information, including nil returns, by 13 February.
