The visit to Guam will depend on the reaction of the US authorities; but as far as the visit to CINCPAC is concerned, we received six weeks ago a most cordial letter from the Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Hays, looking forward to our visit and making some preliminary arrangements.
It is, of course, unsatisfactory that the programme which has remained unchanged for almost three months should have to be changed at this comparatively late stage; but in view of what we have now been told by the Americans, we have no alternative.
Oman
As I told Helen Robins, we are hoping to spend an additional two days in Oman after the end of SAIF SAREEA.
The Omani Ambassador volunteered some suggestions; I attach a copy of my letter following my conversation with him. We will, of course, take note of any comments you have have on this.
I have spoken to Kenneth Brazier of the Omani Embassy, and subsequently to Alan White of the Middle East Department, about visa requirements. When our party's passports are ready to have the visas inserted, we will request the appropriate Diplomatic Note direct from White.
Visit to the Federal German Navy, February 1987
I am forwarding for your information correspondence between ourselves and Admiral Wellershoff, and (which you may already have) correspondence with Captain Bickley in Bonn.
I am sending a copy of this letter, and enclosures, to David Woodhead at the Ministry of Defence.
